Rivers of Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is called the land of five rivers. The rivers of Himachal Pradesh are part of both Indus River System and Ganga River System. Himachal provides water to both the Indus and the Ganga basins. The rivers are mentions from top to bottom in geographical map of Himachal Pradesh.
1. CHENAB
The Chenab river is formed when the two streams namely Chandra and Bhaga meets at Tandi place. The Chandra rises from the South-East and Bhaga from the North West of the Baralacha pass. It enters Pangi valley of Chamba district near Bhujind and leaves the district at Sansari Nala and enter Podar valley of Kashmir.
- Chenab river is largest river of Himachal Pradesh in terms of volume of water.

2. RAVI
Ravi river rises from "Bara Banghal" which is a branch of Dhauladhar as a joint stream formed by the glacier fed Badal and Tant Gari. Chamba town is situated on the right bank of the Ravi river. The Ravi flows by the foot of Dalhousie hill, throught the famous Chamba Valley. The Ravi first flows Westward througha trough separating the Pir Panjal from Dhauladhar range and then turns Southward, cutting the deep gorge through the Dhauladhar range.

3. BEAS
Beas river originates from the Rohtang pass which is at height of 13050 feet. This pass lies on the Manali-leh highway. After himalyas this river flows through the fields of Punjab and Pakistan and then flow into the Arabian Sea. On the right side of this pass lies the source of the river Beas known as "Beas Rishi" To the south of this source lies another source known as "Beas kund". Both these sources of river meet at "Palachan village". The cities that lies beside the river Beas are Manali, Naggar, Katrain, Raison, Kullu, Pandoh, Mandi and Sujanpur. The river Beas embraces the river Satluj at "Hari ka Patan" in Ferozepore district of Punjab before flowing into Pakistan.

4. SATLUJ
Satluj river originates from Southern slopes of the Kailash mountain, near "Mansarover lake". It enters Himachal at "Shipki" and flows through Kinnaur, Shimla, Kullu, Solan, Mandi and Bilaspur districts. It leaves Himachal Pradesh to enter the plains of Punjab at Bhakhra. The Satluj finally drains into the Indus in Pakistan. The human settlements on the bank of Satluj river are Namgia, Kalpa, Rampur, Tattapani, Suni and Bilaspur.

5. YAMUNA
Yamuna river is the shortest river which crosses throught himachal. Yamuna river is the largest tributary of the Ganga. Yamuna has mythical relation to he God Sun and Kalind parvat. It rises from "Yamunotri" in Gharwal hills and forms the Eastern boundary with Uttaranchal. The Yamuna is the Eastern most river of Himachal Pradesh. Its famous tributaries are Tons, Pabbar and Giri. The river Yamuna leaves the state near "Tajewala" and enters into the Haryana state. Human settlement near river Yamuna in Himachal Pradesh is Ponta Sahib.
